Why Accessibility Matters

Accessibility isn't a nice-to-have — it's a requirement. Over one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, and inaccessible websites exclude a significant portion of your potential audience. Beyond ethics, there are legal and SEO benefits too.

The Accessibility Checklist

1. Color Contrast

Ensure text meets WCAG contrast ratios: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text. Use tools like WebAIM Contrast Checker to verify.

2. Keyboard Navigation

Every interactive element must be reachable and operable using only a keyboard. No mouse traps.

3. Alt Text for Images

Provide descriptive alt attributes for all meaningful images. Decorative images should use empty alt text.

4. Semantic HTML

Use proper heading hierarchy (h1 → h6), landmark elements (main, nav, section, aside), and ARIA labels where needed.

5. Focus Indicators

Never remove focus outlines. Ensure keyboard focus is clearly visible on all interactive elements.

6. Form Labels

Every form field needs a programmatically associated label. Use <label> or aria-labelledby.
